Chapter 12

Sophie sat on a comfortable sofa in a corner of performers’ lounge at the Dayan Springs theater. It was right before the end of the evening’s performance, with Anthony’s reading act as the grand finale.

Despite the chatter and banter between the other performers going on around her, she could hear the applause that marked the conclusion of his act. It wasn’t but a few minutes later he swept into the room to flop onto the cushions beside her. Nicco did not allow encores.

Anthony left out a deep sigh and turned his head from where it lay against the cushions to look at her.

“What brings you here so late at night, sweet cousin?”

“I met with that Norm this afternoon.”

“What Norm?”

It was Sophie’s turn to sigh. “The one The Family requested I do? The one I told you about on the phone?” She was not going to mention Viora’s name in front of all the people in the room, even if they appeared to be busy with other conversations.

“Oh, that one.” Anthony sat up and looked at her more keenly. “How did it go?”

“Well, it felt like an interrogation for one thing. And he had me do a reading for him.”

“A reading? I thought he was only there to check you out for a friend?”

“Oh, so you remember our phone conversation?” she said as she slapped his arm playfully.

“Of course, I do,” he said, grinning. “Now that you reminded me,” he admitted with a wink.

“I was told I had to convince him to get his friend to a reading. Doing a reading for free is not my usual approach, but it seemed the best thing under the circumstances.”

“And…?” Anthony queried, raising his eyebrows.

“Anthony,” she admonished him, “you know that readings are my sacred work for the Goddess. I may not share them.”

“Except with The Family,” he amended.

Sophies scowled, and she felt a surge of frustration and anger, then fear. She had to bring The Family information from her clients that they might find helpful. And she constantly battled her desire to be true to her calling in serving the Goddess with her gift, and the necessity of being bound to The Family to serve them in any way they requested.

Luckily most of her clients only came to her for one or two readings, so she never had to find out how The Family used the information she gathered. A tenuous mercy she allowed herself.

Anthony reached out to clasp her hand in his and gave it a tight squeeze. The performances with his gift were a lark to him, providing his flamboyant personality the spotlight in front of an adoring, captive audiences. But he knew how much she struggled with her responsibilities to The Family.

“Come, come, now,” he said patting her leg. “Let’s do my reading.”

Sophie grudgingly gave him a small smile.

This was their game together. Anthony always asked for a reading from her when he saw her. Despite the fact the reading was the same for him every time.

He tapped the coffee table in front of him with his finger.
